Symbolism

For the first time since he took office, the president today, St. Patrick's Day, went to church.
He chose an Episcopal church, which historically has close ties with the official High Episcopal Church of England, and he wore a red tie, not green.

Is there some symbolism there, indicating favoritism towards Britain, or is it simply ignorance?

   Or both?
