Premonition

The candidate now says, "We're working against a rigged system." This carries a suggestion that he is admitting the possibility he might lose. In turn, this sets him up to claim that when he does, it will be because of a conspiracy against him, and that he should have won.
That's the same kind of reasoning that schoolyard bullies use when they don't get their own way. Nothing is ever their fault; it's always someone else's doing that they do not succeed.
Meanwhile, more senior members of his own party are questioning his behavior, and are either softening their support, reconsidering their endorsement, suggesting they may not vote for anyone, and at least one senior Republican saying he will cast his ballot for the opposition candidate.
Perhaps there is a possibility that the candidate will pick up his metaphorical marbles (if he has any left) and go home. When he loses the support of leaders of his own party and the election, this will "prove" to him that "everyone's against me, they're all picking on me, I told you the system was rigged."
   It's the political equivalent of a super-snit.
